The day of Atonement sounds serious because it is. This Holy day is observed on the tenth day of the seventh month. It is a day of mourning, afflicting one's self and prayer.

One day a year the high priest could enter God's presence and make an atonement for the sins of the people. He would use the blood of one young goat and sprinkle it on the Ark of the Covenant as a sin offering. Then he would place all the sins of the people on the head of another goat and kick it out of the camp.

Goats are used in the bible to represent sinful people and the devil. When Jesus died on the cross he took all of our sins onto himself and became sin for us (just like the first goat). Then he paid the price for that sin with his life.

On judgement day Jesus will separate the lambs (all those who are covered by his blood) from the goats (all those who continue to live in sin). Because Jesus has atoned for their sins, the lambs will be saved. All the goats will be kicked out into the wilderness.
